HELP! My Dog is Overheating!

DID YOU KNOW YOU SHOULD NEVER POUR COLD WATER OR PUT A COLD WET TOWEL ON THEIR BACK?

Summertime is a great time to go out, get some good exercise, breath in some fresh air, and just have some fun during the day. That’s why you often see dogs and their owners go on walks more frequently in the Summer than any other time of the year.

What we need to remember is there are dangers and safety risks not just for people, but for our beloved fur babies as well.

In this article, you will:

  1. Learn the top 5 reasons why dogs pant
  2. Learn what heat exposure sickness is and how it can affect a dog
  3. Learn what to do when your dog is affected by heat
  4. Learn the top 8 preventive measures to care for your dog in the heat

The top reasons why dogs pant

Dogs have a natural tendency to pant. It’s their natural tendency to cool off after strenuous exercise or playful activities. But when their panting and breathing unusually reaches a rate higher than 40 breaths per minute, we should be on high alert.

What we should take note of is the activity they had prior to their panting.

These are the top 5 reasons why dogs pant:

  1. Happiness
    • When they feel loved and cared for, they show it through kisses and panting
  2. Excitement
    • Seeing new animals and people they know can mean potential playtime and treats.
  3. Playtime
    • Just like breathing is necessary for exercise, panting is essential during playtime.
  4. Emotional Stress
    • Dogs experience anxiety and depression with a change of environment.
  5. Physical Pain or Discomfort
    • There could be an injury or sickness your dog may be secretly hiding, and the only true sign is excessive panting.

High temperatures and excessive heat can cause dogs to become overheated and sick.

Heat Exposure Risk and Safety

What is heat exposure sickness?

Heat exposure sickness is exactly how it sounds. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat or even moderate heat can be very dangerous. The two most widely known sicknesses which are common in temperatures above 80°F (26.7°C) are heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Heat exhaustion happens when the body loses too much water and salt, through long periods of sweating. Cooling down starts to become difficult at this stage.

Heatstroke however, is the loss of the body’s natural ability to cool down from high internal temperature, which can become life-threatening. Medical treatment is highly recommended at this stage.

Why is it important to know about it?

During heat exhaustion, the affected person can start to feel various symptoms:

  • Confusion or Dizziness
  • Faint, faster pulse
  • Headache
  • Shortness of breath
  • Pale or clammy looking skin
  • Parched or dry-mouth
  • Weakness or drowsiness

During heatstroke, the affected person can exhibit serious symptoms:

  • Internal temperature above 104° (40°C)
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Red or dry looking skin
  • Strong, rapid pulse

While heat exhaustion can be treated by the individual experiencing these symptoms, people experiencing heatstroke should seek medical treatment and/or attention. Most of the time, a call to 911 (or your local emergency line) is needed.

How can this affect my dog?

Dogs can also develop heat rash which causes physical discomfort, but is considered less life-threatening. Even though, it is not deadly, it still should be taken seriously.

Asphalt dangers
Burnt paw pads

Asphalt gets hot, paws get burnt. It only takes a couple minutes to damage the pads on a dog’s paws. Look at the photo above as reference.

We’ve done an independent analysis of both concrete and asphalt surface temperatures in hot climates as shown in the chart below:

Note: Not all parts of the world experience the same level of heat. Conditions vary from place to place, region to region, country to country.

Rule of thumb: If you can curl your thumb and press it onto the surface without pulling up, it’s safe enough. If not, it’s much too hot for a dog to walk on.

In hot weather, here are the symptoms to look for in dogs:

  • Blisters
  • Bloody urine
  • Drooling
  • Dry nose
  • Excessive panting
  • Faster pulse
  • Foul odor
  • Higher internal temperature
  • Mood changes
  • Redness
  • Tenderness of the skin
  • Vomiting

It’s important to recognize these signs and take the proper precautions and safety measures in treating dogs for heat exposure sickness.

Animal lovers should never make the mistake of throwing cold water on an overheated dog or putting a cold wet towel on their back. You will see the opposite effect.

The result can be a very slow, painful death. If you try to help an overheated dog in this manner, they will surely die.

Overheating treatment

According to Veterinary health studies and Pet Clinics, overheated animals should be treated right away. Proper treatment can lead to a quicker recovery.

When cooling off our dogs, we should be very careful and mindful as to not worsen their condition. An extreme temperature change can shock their systems and cause more severe symptoms. Dogs can form life-threatening blood clots.

Due to cold temperature, veins and arteries contract. Due to high temperature, proteins in the blood can clot, which makes the blood thicken and become viscous.

With a combination of the two, blood starts to coagulate and the heart can have a very hard time or can no longer circulate the blood, making the organs fail one by one due to lack of oxygen.

HERE’S WHAT YOU SHOULD DO…

Gradually reduce their temperature using the following steps:

  1. Move the dog into a shaded or dark area.
  2. Give the dog cool (not cold) or lukewarm water to drink.
  3. Use a spray bottle to put an air cooled mist around them.
  4. Cool the soles of their feet and chest/lower abdomen with a damp towel.
  5. Get them inside into a fan cooled room.
  6. Call the vet for more help, if symptoms persist.

Most dogs are resilient and can recover from the heat. But, there are three specific types of dogs that need special attention during these temperatures:

1. Flat-faced dogs also known as brachycephalics. Any dog with a flat, wide skull and a short nose such as Boston terriers, Bulldogs, Pugs, Pekingese, and Shih Tzus.

2. Hyperactive dogs such as Labrador or Golden Retrievers.

3. Cold weather work dogs such as Saint Bernards and Huskies.

Best practices and Preventive Care

To ensure that dogs can live to their fullest potential, we need to safeguard their health by using safe practices. It begins with getting your dogs acclimated to hot temperatures.

Dogs don’t have a way to sweat. They cool off by panting, but it takes time to get used to being outside in hot weather. Take them out during the daytime when the heat is not at it’s highest peak.

As days become weeks, their bodies will adjust to the heat, but that doesn’t mean they can be left unattended. Always time the amount of heat exposure and be sure to keep eye on their behavior.

Here’s the top 8 ways to care for your dog in the heat:

  1. Never leave them unattended, especially in a vehicle
    • Even with the weather at 65°F (18°C) and windows slightly down, vehicles can quickly reach hazardous levels.
  2. Limit their exposure and playtime
    • Dogs can quickly overheat in about 10 minutes
  3. Walk them in the grass
    • Avoid asphalt and other hot surfaces
  4. Take periodic breaks
    • Keep near cool shaded areas
  5. Keep them hydrated
    • Bring plenty of water to drink
  6. Use damp towels
    • It can keep them from overheating
  7. Keep the air circulating
    • Turn on a cooling fan or leave the AC running
  8. Monitor their behavior
    • Know the signs for heatstroke and other heat related illnesses

Even though we’d love to think of our dogs as our personal superheroes, we need to also be sure to protect them as well. They are even more susceptible to these conditions when it comes to the heat.

Knowing what to do and look for will keep you and your dog happy for years to come.

Have a great day. Thanks for reading.

We’d love to be Your Pet’s Birthday Wish

Celebrate your pet’s birthday!

It’s a great thought, of course, but the flaw in this is we don’t actually know your pets’ birthdates. But we can, if you let us know.

Everything in life should be celebrated. Baby’s first steps, first successes from job training, first day of launching a business, anniversaries of a successful joint effort (weddings, milestones, capturing a specific goal), and just winning in general, even the small victories need a little celebration. Why not celebrate the life of your beloved furry partner in crime? I just hope you’re not actually committing crime haha.

So in honor of life celebration, we’d like to invite you to think about giving a gift. Maybe it’s someone you love that needs a little break. Or maybe it’s you, who wants to go away for the weekend. Or maybe it’s your neighbor who don’t quite know who to trust in taking care of their pets, when the ones they’ve been relying on have other commitments of their own. Life happens fast, but we can always help someone with a little gift.

Four ways to Gift

  1. Purchase an eGift Card for your loved one or neighbor and send it to them with your own personal message. Even a small amount helps.
  2. Book your next getaway, but don’t forget about your pet. We’d love to have your pets over, so please book a stay with us.
  3. Book a stay for your pet on their birthday as a treat, and we’ll give them the royal treatment. We offer discounts on extended stays, let us know when.
  4. If you’ve experienced our service, why not share your experience with others who needs our services? This option is Free, AND if they tell us you referred them, we’ll give you your own eGift Card or choice of Petraordinary branded merchandise ($20 value) on your next visit.

We truly appreciate your continued support. It truly means a lot when you book your pet services with us, because that means you trust we do a good job for you. So, the next time you think about going out of town, you can rest assured your pet will be taken well care of.

How and Why Pet Food has evolved over the years

We all love our pets. Sometimes we love them more than humans. That’s why we take special care in giving our pets very wholesome and enjoyable meals and treats whenever possible. Meals and treats that remind them of how much we love them and how much we want them to be with us for as long as they can.

It’s very sad to lose any pet. We’ve had our share of losses too. And it’s because of these losses that we have to consider a change in diet for our beloved fur babies.

Grain based diets are Harmful

Kibble is a common way to feed our pets. It is amongst the easiest ways to plan and schedule feeding times for furry family. Not all kibble has been designed or developed in the mentality to keep our pets healthy. In fact, there are studies that link some cancers and other diseases with the processed foods we give to our pets. A lot of these foods contain grains and other filler ingredients.

We’re not saying all grains are bad. For the most part, mass-produced grains are not very good for digestion and cause inflammation to vital organs. Things like wheat, corn, and oats can be questionably grown with genetically modified organisms (GMO) and are considered very harmful to both humans and animals. But there are also grains that are highly coveted and provide many health benefits. We will talk about that in a future article.

There are many new companies which offer more protein based products. Products that link to a higher energy level, shinier coat, increased activity, normal stools, and various other benefits when used over grain based pet foods.

Grain or Grain Free

We’re not the experts on this matter. But you can find several articles related to this specific topic. Below is a video we thought would be useful in explaining the differences in grain and grain free.

YouTube | The Tattooed Dog Trainer

Since the discovery of harmful side effects of grains in food, a movement for healthier choices and green eating has become widely recognized and accepted. If the food isn’t good enough for a human, than they’re certainly not good enough for our pets either. Right?

Grain free products started to hit the market at a slow, but noticeable pace over the years. A demand for them has opened a doorway for scientists and nutritionists to explore the possibility of using fresh foods, and sourcing them from reputable suppliers. The need for these products over processed pet foods has been on the rise ever since.

Fresh food vs. Raw food

Fresh foods have been another popular choice in feeding our fur babies. Some of these were merely leftovers we didn’t feel like eating later, and basically junk food for our pets. The problem here lies in the process of cooking these foods, which can also be harmful to our pets as well.

Fresh foods offer a variety of benefits. When prepared from scratch and holistically cooked with our pets in mind, we can find them to be more excited when it comes to meal time. They are often happier and have less health issues from this method, because they know we’ve taken the time to make them a heartfelt meal when we also decide to eat.

This brings us to raw foods. Raw foods offer the same type of benefits and are more naturally and biologically digestible for our pets. That’s why you will find diehard advocates who believe that this is the best way to feed your fur babies, and rightfully so.

It’s up to you

We’re not here to give you advice. Ultimately it’s your choice. We just want to give you the information, so that you can make a careful decision, the next time meal time comes around for your pets. We care about all animals, just as much as we care for pets and feeding them the right way, will ensure longevity and more happy years to come.

Here are a few suggestions on grain free, fresh food, and raw food choices for your fur babies:

Blue Buffalo

Blue Buffalo is centered around the food philosophy of how pets should be fed. They provide grain free products in all categories and have a very comprehensive quiz that caters to your specific pet needs.

Ollie

Ollie is centered around a mixture of dry and wet foods prepared by subscription for delivery to your home, so you never have to go out and buy it yourself.

The Farmer’s Dog

The Farmer’s Dog is centered around human-grade raw foods, straight from high quality reputable sources, which may be purchased in stores or online.

Woody’s Pet Food Deli

If you’re native to Minnesota, you can find a local Woody’s to window shop your choices and speak with their staff about their variety.

Badlands Ranch

Badlands Ranch is designed with kibble in mind, but without the low quality, overcooked ingredients most kibble manufacturers use. They pride themselves in providing a clean, healthy, and nutritious option.

We don’t have a favorite choice here. It’s really just up to you at this point. But if you liked reading this, please consider subscribing to our blog for more tips and information on how to love your pets, like we love them as our own. Thanks for reading.

Ways Pricing Can Affect Business

How to Price Effectively

When it comes to pricing, most self starters or startup companies shoot from the hip. There is very little thought going into the price. They see something similar to what they sell and use that price as the standard, and that’s it.

The good thing about approaching prices that way, is it helps get things moving right away. The bad thing about that approach is it makes you look and feel like everything else at that price point. What makes your product/service different?

To effectively price, there are important things that need to be considered:

  1. Who are the buyers?
  2. What do they need?
  3. How often do they need it?
  4. How often can you supply it?
  5. How fast can you supply it?

Without answering these questions, the problems of pricing incorrectly will hurt your profits and ultimately your business.

Cheaper Isn’t Always Better

One way to compete for business is being the lowest price available. A lot of shoppers look for the cheapest price, and make decisions based on how much things cost.

A low price does one of two things:

  1. Makes purchasing decisions easy
  2. Throws quality out the window

The best quality product is usually placed at the top of the price scale. Have you ever been inside a luxury brand store and said to yourself, “Wow! That’s the same thing I saw at Walmart, but their price was cheaper?” Chances are you saw something similar, but the quality of the product is much lower.

I’m not saying everything you find in a luxury store has better quality, but you’ll be hard pressed to find something with the same quality or better at a cheaper price. When you see a low price, be cautious about buying until you understand what the product or service is all about.

Pricing Variances

Similar and the same. These are the areas that kill business. When it comes to products and services, people want to be able to choose. It gives them the ability to change their mind and customize their approach to purchase within their budget. Variances change their experience.

Variance, or in other words variety makes things better. It doesn’t have to be so different, but colors matter more for products. Think of your pet’s collar, why did you choose it? Was it because it was the best brand or was it because of your favorite color? This is why variety is so important.

Other things that help in variances are bundles. If you’re an avid shopper, you’ll be looking for the best deals. Deals often offer more things at once by bundling products and services. These are often called packages or plans. Many businesses will refer to these in their own unique terms.

Price is Not Everything

That’s insane, right? You can reason out why prices are very important, but the fact is that the perceived value is more important. When you bundle, you increase value. Most people are likely to purchase a bundle over a singular item, because through perceived value, they save money. Makes sense, right?

Let’s put this into perspective. Restaurants for example have a very low margin for error. A sit down restaurant will often price things a la carte or pay for each item, while a fast food chain will price similar things in a bundle, labeled as a meal. The sit down restaurant might have better quality, but the fast food is made more affordable through bundles and the buying process is much easier, making things go faster.

Branding also plays into the restaurant scene. When you’re not easily identifiable, it’s hard to attract customers, because they’re not familiar with what is represented. Marketing through advertising usually closes that gap, but can cost a lot if not done correctly. Competing with that business model is very difficult. That’s why so many sit down restaurants often close doors shortly after opening.

Now, let’s look at hotels. A 2-star hotel will price their rooms lower to attract more customers who are looking for a bargain. The reason why it’s a 2-star hotel is because it lacks quality. The room might not be as well kept, making the experience not so great. They might book fully more days per week, but the returning guest list is very poor.

A 5-star hotel will price their rooms very high to attract customers who want a comfortable stay. The reason why they can price higher is because they offer more amenities and the quality of the stay far exceeds that of a 2-star hotel. They might not book full on one or two days a week, but they’ve earned return quests.

The Bottom Line

What is the point to pricing? You can take all the pricing information and strategies out there and use it for your business, but the fact is quality and customer satisfaction always trumps price.

So, if you’re considering on starting a business or searching for a new business that can serve your needs, you should really consider the quality and customer experience they provide all around their pricing. Odds are that you’ll find better quality and experience with a higher price.

Yes, that’s not always the case. Remember earlier when I mentioned startups shooting from the hip about pricing? That’s where you can find out if they’re the real deal or not. Always compare two or more prices to the quality you will get or seek.

Our services are not priced as high as what you’d expect from a pet hotel, but their quality and customer experience cannot be matched to our prices. We treat every pet under our care like they’re our own. If that’s not what you’re looking for, happy hunting.

DIY Dog Training

Sometimes you don’t have the time or money to bring your dog to a professional pet trainer. The thought of having to schedule, drop off, and then pick up, is a turn off on its own, right?

While you may be thinking training your dog needs lots of skill, it really depends on how much effort you’re willing to put in to make it work for yourself and your dog.

By no means are we telling you not to get your dog on a professional level of training, but when you have the willingness to put in the work, you will find that it can be done on your own. So, let’s get to it!

Dog Training over the Years

Man’s best friend has been around longer than we can ever imagine. Throughout the years, they’ve become our protectors, our hunters, our friends, and sometimes, unfortunately, a pain in the neck.

As a DIYer, you will need to find your dog’s main motivation. Most of the time it’s food, but many times it can just be the thought of getting a nice belly rub.

Once you have that part figured out, next is to find a nice open space and a clicker, or audible noise, to help signal your pup whenever it’s their turn to do something.

To start, demonstrate the behavior by showing them what to do. Next, click to let them know it’s correct. Finally, reinforce and reward the good behavior by giving them treats.

Sounds simple right?

Dogs won’t always get it on the first try, so you need to be patient with them. Sometimes it takes a lot of repetition to get the right behavior and balance of when to treat and not to treat. You should only treat your dog when they show good behavior.

Don’t spoil them with treats. It will undo the training you have already committed doing with them.

Of course, if you’re having trouble trying to figure it out on your own, we have compiled a list of the top three free dog training apps we recommend to get, where you can use it anywhere and anytime, until of course you need to pay for advanced training.

The Dog Daddy

Even the best of us have difficulty taming the most adorable creatures. And if you’re still adamant about learning, you might want to check out The Dog Daddy. His unorthodox methods go away from the traditional approach. It’s always fascinating and free to watch.

Grains for the Ages

Top 5 grains meant for your pets

Back in March, we wrote an article about the evolution of food and how it relates to our beloved pets. We mentioned that there are harmful grains, when digested, that can cause serious health issues. We also mentioned that there are coveted grains that provide benefits to pets, despite there being the rising trends in grain free pet food. There is a huge amount of controversy all over the internet surrounding this subject, but we decided to help provide some clarity on grain benefits.

Humans and animals have different digestive systems. Many studies have shown that gluten and various grains are not linked to some illnesses thought to be the cause of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes in animals. In fact, some of the most common grains can still hold beneficial effects on pets.

Whole grains are said to be fillers. These grains are considered controversial. Grains like wheat, corn, and rye still can produce meaningful results even when fed to our pets, but the processes used for extraction and production are often the reason why they are more complicated and require strict consideration.

These processes surround partial grains. Truthfully, according to some animal nutritionists and veterinarians, partial grains can still hold the same nutritional value as the whole grain itself and don’t provide much more benefit than the whole grain.

Safe grains?

There are five grains we will talk about here. These grains, amongst many others, are considered the most beneficial sources for both their nutritional value and health benefits. Not one is more important than the other, so don’t use this list to prioritize one over the other. It is meant to show the variety of options to consider, when choosing grain foods for your pet.

1. Sorghum

Petraordinary Virtual Assistant or Chatbot?

Are real conversations dying?

Petraordinary with Messenger and OpenAI

A New Petventure?

Virtual anything is everywhere. And with the introduction of artificial intelligence, or A.I., into many digital aspects of the life we call the internet, it’s only natural to think it makes for a simpler and faster way to get things done. But is it really better?

Now, our goal is not to sway you either way, but just to really inform you of our direction with our business(es). We like to think that there are useful ways to introduce our clients to this concept. A lot of things are scary concerning the potential of A.I., but to learn more about how things work, we need to be in the center of it, or at least use it ourselves.

Our goal is to provide a better and more fluid communication experience. If a virtual assistant or Chatbot can help you solve something, then we want to be able to provide our clients with that service experience. If it’s unable to provide answers, then we will be notified of the situation, then have the ability to jump in at that point in the conversation. Makes sense?

We believe in testing, at least the application of it. When we decide it’s not working, we will either revise the plan or remove it. Many times, when businesses don’t follow the advancements of technology and do the same things as other successful businesses do, they fall behind, get outdated, and eventually disappear. We obviously don’t want that to happen, because we love caring for your fur babies, and we’re willing to try to make this work. So, we encourage you to test it with us. Is that fair?

Launch Plans

Within the next month or so, you will see this project go live. The first step is to create a means to message us directly. We decided that Messenger by Meta Platforms, Inc. is a great and recognizable messaging tool which will provide better user experience with our website and other projects in the works. It will also easily provide another path for payments, communication, and site navigation, when the Chatbot is enabled. If you already follow us on Facebook or Instagram, you’re halfway there.

Download Messenger now, by tapping the buttons to your App Store, respectively, associated with your specific phone below, to join us for free.

Download for Android
Download for iPhone

Not available for your phone? Download here to get it for your desktop or laptop.

After we’re all accustomed to using messenger, when we go live, you’ll be able to directly send us a message from the website or from the Messenger app on your phone. That way, when you have questions or concerns, we will be able to help you right away.

The second step is to enable a chatbot or A.I. virtual assistant. This isn’t meant to replace us to resolve problems, but more of a way to help solve issues when dealing with things like:

  1. Booking appointments
  2. Getting more information about Booking Passes
  3. Getting information about pricing
  4. How to request for cancellation of a booking
  5. How to give us feedback and give us a review. (Something very special to us.)
  6. How to get referral codes/credit
  7. And so much more…

We’re not going to ignore you, but when we’re not available to answer your question, at least there’s a way to get you that information, so it can be quickly resolved. And if you what you want to find is not available, you can easily call or text us, as usual. For now, consider using messenger for future communication.

We hope our plans to keep relevant with the market trends helps you. Give us your thoughts below on this topic, or other ways we can improve our service to you. That way, we always do the things that serve you best.

February Frenzy

Hello everyone! February is a great month to start thinking about gifts for your friends and loved ones. You know, with that day coming around the corner? *wink* *wink*

So we decided to give you some gift ideas that we know you’d appreciate as much as we do as animal lovers.

Send Some Pet Love

Every now and then people like getting away for a weekend or two to escape the stresses of work or life all together. The only problem is, sometimes their fur babies aren’t able to go along with them. That’s why they like to turn to us for help with their pets.

Besides, if you’ve been with us since the beginning, then you already know what type of service we give. So why not gift that same opportunity to them with an eGift Card? You can send some pet love by clicking here.

Pet Pillow?

It’s a crazy idea, we know! But if you love your pets like they’re your children or know someone who does, why not create a special pillow of them to take while on a getaway. Numerous people have already made this decision and it’s been proven to be so heartwarming and sentimental for those who love them.

Want to know how it’s done? Click the video below to see that process from All About Vibe.

Whatever the occasion, we just just want you to be able to enjoy and express yourself with the love and kindness you show your pets to the people you care about in your life.
